Definition:

This is a professional position comprising a variety of education initiatives designed to develop and coordinate a program based on Missouri State Archives holdings, which informs and assists the public on the use of primary sources.

The Historical Educator coordinates monthly special events for adults, children, individuals and families that are designed to increase the knowledge of, appreciation for and a connection with Missouri's past.

The Historical Educator reports to the Assistant State Archivist and works closely with the State Archivist and the Archives' Principal Assistant for Boards and Commissions.

 

Job Functions and General Responsibilities:

  • Develops public programs for adult and family audiences and provides regularly scheduled age-specific children's programming throughout the year.
  • Coordinates, develops, schedules and oversees all aspects of Archives Alive!, the Missouri State Archives' educational performance program.
  • Develops online educational resources related to primary sources.
  • Pursues private and corporate funding for educational programming.
  • Coordinates the central Missouri National History Day.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of historical research sources, methods and techniques with a preferred knowledge of Missouri history.
  • Knowledge of teaching sources, methods and techniques.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, both with peers and in presentations to classrooms and civic organizations.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and public contacts.
  • Ability to work with online information formats in educational environments.
  • Occasional travel and evening and weekend hours.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri driver's license or be able to secure one within 30 days of employment.

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university. A Master's degree in history and three years teaching experience strongly preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
