Definition:

Assists Conservators in carrying out essential conservation treatments on, primarily, book and paper-based items. This requires performing a variety of diverse and detailed tasks that require the ability to work independently within established practices. Under the direct supervision of the conservation staff and the general supervision of the Director of Local Records, Conservator Technician executes duties crucial to the long-term preservation of government records.

Job Functions and General Responsibilities:

  • Assists with conservation treatments of archived materials
  • Perform standard treatments on high-volume work including, but not limited to:
    • Dry surface cleaning
    • Humidification and flattening
    • Removal of adhesives, backings, fasteners, old mends
    • Mending and backing/lining
    • Construction of protective enclosures
    • Mold remediation
  • Assists with condition reports, photo documentation, and maintaining records
  • Helps maintain lab space, tools, and equipment
  • Tracks and retrieves supplies
  • Provides basic handling training for in-house staff, volunteers, and interns
  • Assists conservators with presentations and workshops
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent manual dexterity for performing finely detailed work (a dexterity may be included as part of the interview process)
  • Detail-oriented
  • Skilled in using knives, scissors, adhesives, etc.
  • Ability to consistently perform tedious repetitive tasks
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and photo-editing software
  • Basic understanding of digital photography
  • Good written communication

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid Missouri driver's license or be able to secure one within 30 days of employment
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, reach shelves above eye level, lift and carry 40 lbs., and climb a ladder to retrieve materials
  • Ability to tolerate records containing dust and mold spores

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Significant interest in book and paper conservation and archives preservation
  • Knowledge of basic chemistry
