Definition:

This is a professional position that ensures the preservation of and access to state-created records of permanent historical value regardless of format.

This position contributes to the State Archives by performing a variety of standard archival duties, including, but not limited to accessioning, arranging, housing, labeling, describing and creating finding aids for state-created records. The archivist may be asked to work with both physical and electronic records and to work with content management software.

Job Functions and/or General Responsibilities:

  • Provides processing of all permanent state-created records, regardless of format, transferred to the State Archives.
  • Establishes intellectual control over records and promotes access to them by creating descriptions that definitively represent the material.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of records and information policies and procedures for management of records to ensure long-term access and preservation.
  • Identifies records' conservation problems and makes recommendations for preservation.
  • Performs direct archival research for government agencies, the public, legislature, scholars, attorneys, etc. and explains research methods to researchers.
  • Prepares written reports and correspondence.
  • Works on a wide variety of special projects including, but not limited to, promoting the Archives through public outreach and agency training.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of archival principles and established archival practices related to the collection and disposition of public records.
  • Knowledge of sources, methods and techniques used in historical research.
  • Proficiency in expressing ideas clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, public officials, private groups and the public.
  • Broad knowledge of Missouri history preferred.
  • Knowledge of the organization of state agencies preferred.

Strongly Preferred:

  • Knowledge of records life cycle management including disaster prevention and planning.
  • Experience with content management software and database management.
  • Knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices.

Qualifications:

A master's degree in history, library science (with an archival and/or information science focus), computer science or other related field is strongly preferred.

Must be able to lift and carry a forty-pound box of records and climb a ladder to retrieve materials.

Certified Archivist and/or Certified Records Manager designation or the commitment to obtain such as soon as qualified to do so.
